I need a good soil additive for my pumpkin garden?

I live in an area where the soil has a lot of clay. I need some ideas on things I can put in my soil to make it more like potting soil. Sould I add some sand and potting soil to the clay dirt? I'm not even sure what kind of soil pumkins like. I was going to check the pH afterwards.
