Does he like her? She's been hurt in the past x?

One of my best friends was in a lesson (she's doing A levels) and this guy came and sat next to her despite his friends being on the opposite side of the room. She found this weird but she didn't mind. Later on, the lecturer used them two as an example to reinforce her point, she was saying if Chloe and David got married now, then they'll probably divorce couple of years down the line. She just laughed and then she looked at him and he was smiling. And ysterday, they were waiting for that same lecturer, and he smiled at her but she didn't notice. Im just wondering is there a chance he could like her? He seems like a genuine guy and could just be what she needs. She probably likes him too but just doesn't want to admit it as she's been hurt in the past
