Car jerks and does not accelerate when pressing gas?

My car has about 56,000 miles otherwise great condition besides this issue. The couple days my car has occasionally been jerky when I accelerate, but then its fine after a moment. But today I was pressing the gas and the car normally goes in what 2-3000 rpms? but it wasnt going past 1000 and I was afraid it would die then it was fine, then it did it again, and then fine, then jerks,..... luckily I made it home. I heard I could be low on transmission fluid, what do you think?
